The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
The Institute joined the rest of the World in commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People at an auspicious event held by the Embassy of the State of Palestine (Zimbabwe) at Meikles Hotel, 29 November 2017.
We have passed through another somber, sad and sorry year for all Palestinians around the globe. This year of painfully significant dates is marked by great urgency in the face of the deepening suffering of the people in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the refugees in the region and throughout the world.
The scale of the destruction by the Israeli military has left deep questions about respect for the principles of distinction and proportionality, and generated wide calls for accountability. Much more must be done to protect civilians and abide by international human rights and humanitarian law.
On this day of solidarity, our hearts turn to the many Palestine refugees in Gaza and beyond who have been deprived of their inalienable rights, including the right to self-determination and statehood. There is only one way to address such legitimate rights and fears: a peace agreement that results in an end of occupation, an end of conflict, and the creation of a State of Palestine living side-by-side in peace with the State of Israel.
We remain hopeful that your oppression will not be permanent and we encourage the International community to work together to translate the solidarity expressed on this occasion into positive action for peace and justice to move you from the darkness of oppression to the light of freedom.
Long Live the State of Palestine!
